Quick summary

Companies spent two years training models. Now they're finding out almost nobody can keep them running in production. That's the job, and it pays very well.

Training a model is the easy part now. A data scientist can get something impressive running in a notebook in an afternoon.

Getting that same model to run in production for two years, under real traffic, at 2am, without anybody getting paged, takes a completely different skill set, and most companies racing to ship artificial intelligence features have nobody on staff who can do it.

That person is the MLOps engineer. If you're a developer, a DevOps person, or a data scientist trying to decide where to point your career in this AI wave, I think it's one of the smartest bets on the board.

It's less crowded than the AI engineer title everybody is chasing, the pay is excellent, and the work rewards exactly the kind of careful, boring, reliable engineering most people find unglamorous.

Below I'll walk you through what the job is, what it pays (with real numbers from Glassdoor and real job postings), the skills that get you hired, and how to get known for this work so the good offers find you.

1. What an MLOps Engineer Actually Does

MLOps stands for machine learning operations. DevOps merged development and operations into one discipline, and MLOps does the same thing for machine learning and operations. Some postings still write it as ML Ops. Same job.

Where the line falls between data science and MLOps

Mikiko Bazeley, who has worked as a senior MLOps engineer at Mailchimp, has the cleanest definition I've found. In a 2023 post on her Substack, she describes the MLOps engineer's job this way:

“Developer & maintainer of the tooling & infrastructure that supports data science development and deployment.”

— Mikiko Bazeley, Substack, 2023

A data scientist or machine learning engineer owns model development: picking the algorithm, assembling the training data, building and testing models in TensorFlow or PyTorch. You own everything that carries that ML model into production environments and keeps it healthy for its whole lifecycle.

What the job looks like in real postings

Day to day, that means CI/CD pipelines that automate retraining and redeploying models, Docker containers, Kubernetes for scalability, versioning every machine learning model with MLflow or DVC, and monitoring for model drift, which is what happens when the real world stops looking like the data a model learned from and its accuracy slowly falls apart.

Read the MLOps engineer roles and responsibilities in a handful of real postings and you'll see how ops-heavy this engineer role is. TRM Labs' Senior MLOps Engineer, LLMOps posting asks for Python, Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools like Datadog and Prometheus. That's a DevOps job description with machine learning layered on top, and it's typical.

2. A Day in the Life of an MLOps Engineer

Most mornings start with dashboards. Is model performance holding? Is latency creeping up? Did last night's retraining job finish, or did it die at step four and leave a stale model serving traffic?

After that you're mostly writing infrastructure code: Terraform to provision GPUs, Kubernetes manifests to scale model-serving pods, and the deployment config that rolls a new version out behind the old one and rolls it back if the numbers dip.

Developer between monitoring dashboards and a server rack, linked by circuit lines
The notebook sits on one side and the production servers on the other. The MLOps engineer owns everything in between, including the dashboards you check every morning.

You'll also sit with data scientists who want to ship a new model this week, and your job in that meeting is to be the annoying one. Was it tested against the same evaluation set as the last version? Is it versioned? If it underperforms, can we roll back in five minutes, or does that eat a weekend?

The incidents nobody puts in a tutorial

  • Upstream data changes. A model that looked great in testing starts slipping because an upstream team changed the format of the data feeding it.
  • Runaway autoscaling. An autoscaling rule spins up GPUs nobody asked for and the cloud bill jumps overnight.
  • A dead retraining pipeline. It fails silently for two weeks before anyone notices the model stopped updating.

None of the MLOps workflows that keep this stuff alive show up in a tutorial, which is exactly why people who've lived through them get paid well.

3. MLOps Engineer Salary Expectations in 2026

Set your salary expectations with one fact in mind: this title hasn't settled into a single job yet.

The recruiting firm KORE1 made this point in its 2026 MLOps salary guide, noting that Glassdoor, ZipRecruiter, and Salary.com put average pay at roughly $161,000, $88,000, and $131,000.

The spread exists because one title covers everyone from a DevOps engineer babysitting a single model to a senior ML platform engineer at a frontier lab.

  • Glassdoor$161,000
  • Salary.com$131,000
  • ZipRecruiter$88,000

What Glassdoor's own numbers say

Glassdoor is the number I'd anchor on. It puts average total pay for an MLOps engineer in the United States at about $161,000.

For senior MLOps engineers its most likely range is $170,350 to $260,612, with a median of $209,037, though that senior figure rests on only eight reported salaries, so treat it as rough.

Glassdoor's New York City average is $188,926, about 17% above the national figure, and its California average is around $183,000.

At the bottom of the ladder, Salary.com puts entry-level MLOps pay at about $82,000 and early-career pay (one to two years) at about $99,600.

What real postings pay

Real postings tell you more than averages.

Anduril Industries listed a Machine Learning/MLOps Engineer role in Costa Mesa at $191,000 to $253,000 base, with equity on top. TRM Labs listed its Senior MLOps Engineer, LLMOps role at $200,000 to $275,000 base.

NVIDIA's Senior AI MLOps Engineer opening on its Education Services team, which trains partners to deploy and support NVIDIA's AI infrastructure, showed up on Built In at $192,000 to $305,000. JPMorganChase's Lead Machine Learning Engineer, MLOps role lists $171,000 to $260,000 for Palo Alto and New York.

How it compares to adjacent career paths

For a rough comparison, our machine learning engineer career path data shows a national median around $129,000, and the DevOps engineer career path sits around $144,000. Those come from different data sources than Glassdoor, so don't read the exact gap too literally.

The direction is real, though. MLOps pays you to be competent at two jobs at once, and the market prices that in.

Everyone chasing an MLOps title right now is learning the same Kubernetes config and the same MLflow setup as every other candidate, so the tools alone won't set you apart. 4. The Technical Skills an MLOps Engineer Needs

Python first. Every AI-adjacent role starts there. Past that, the stack leans harder into infrastructure than most people expect.

The infrastructure skills

  • Docker and Kubernetes. You need both well enough to build scalable model serving yourself.
  • CI/CD and real automation. A model you can't redeploy automatically becomes a liability the day it starts slipping.
  • One cloud ML platform, cold. AWS SageMaker, Google's Vertex AI, or Azure Machine Learning. Most postings name one specifically, so look at the jobs you actually want and learn that one.

The ML-specific tools

Then come the ML-specific software tools that separate you from a generalist DevOps engineer.

  • MLflow or DVC. Handles model versioning.
  • Kubeflow or Airflow. Orchestrates ML pipelines and retraining.
  • Weights & Biases. Tracks experiments.

Add enough statistics to tell a model that's genuinely degrading from one that just had a noisy day, and you've covered the technical skills most of these postings ask for.

A machine learning PhD is optional. The engineers who do well in this role usually came up through real software engineering and software development first, and they treat an ML model like any other production service, with versioning, rollback, observability, and an on-call rotation.

That habit gets people hired more reliably than any certificate I know of.

5. How to Become an MLOps Engineer, Step by Step

Step one: get solid at Python and basic software engineering. Tests, version control, code review. People skip this and end up able to configure Kubeflow but unable to figure out why the pipeline actually failed.

Step two: learn Docker and Kubernetes by deploying something you built. Your own project, something with real moving parts. Deploy it, break it, fix it.

Step three: go deep on one cloud ML platform and build one end-to-end project. SageMaker shows up in a lot of postings, so it's a reasonable default.

Ingest data, handle model training, version the result, deploy it, and monitor model performance over time. Training and deploying one model all the way through teaches you more than a dozen scattered tutorials, and it becomes the centerpiece of your portfolio.

Where your background matters

Step four: fill in the half your background skipped. Coming from DevOps, learn enough machine learning skills to speak the language: training versus inference, why drift happens, why data scientists obsess over reproducibility. Coming from data science, learn production software development: CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and incident response.

That's the whole roadmap. The first three steps get you competent. Step four is what makes a hiring manager take your application seriously.

Plenty of people can train a model from a tutorial. Very few have run one in production and fixed what broke at 2am. The free 5-day Rockstar Engineer Blueprint shows you how to become the MLOps engineer hiring managers already know by name.

6. MLOps Engineer Career Path and Levels

Career progression usually runs like this.

  • Junior MLOps engineer. Maintains existing data pipelines and fixes what breaks.
  • Mid-level MLOps engineer. Owns a full pipeline from training through production monitoring.
  • Senior MLOps engineer. Designs the ML platform other teams build on, decides which tools the MLOps team standardizes on, and is on the hook for model performance long after launch.
  • Staff and principal engineers. Set architecture across multiple ML teams.

Titles are messy here, too: Glassdoor's lead MLOps engineer page shows a median around $154,000, lower than its senior MLOps median, which tells you how inconsistently companies use these labels.

How to move up faster

Moving up fast has a lot more to do with visible ownership than tenure. The engineer who can point to a production incident they caught before it became an outage, or a retraining pipeline that cut model staleness in half, gets promoted ahead of the one who just put in the years.

Write down what you fix. It becomes your promotion case and your resume at the same time, and if you publish it somewhere outside your company, it becomes your reputation.

The AI engineer career path runs on the same logic: visible proof beats years in the seat.

7. MLOps Engineer vs. ML Engineer vs. DevOps Engineer

Recruiters mix these titles up constantly, and it costs people interviews.

RoleOwns
Machine learning engineer (or ML engineer, same thing)Model development: feature engineering, model architecture, evaluation.
MLOps engineerWhat happens after a model is trained: deploying models, monitoring, retraining, rollback.
DevOps engineerSimilar operational work for general software. Usually never has to think about data drift, training data, or why a notebook doesn't translate directly into a production service.

Where the overlap comes from

A lot of MLOps practice comes straight from site reliability engineering, with error budgets, on-call rotations, and postmortems pointed at models instead of APIs.

The overlap between MLOps and ML engineering keeps growing, and plenty of ops engineers end up owning this work by default once their company starts shipping artificial intelligence and machine learning features.

Is MLOps harder than DevOps? It's DevOps plus a second body of knowledge, so yes, a bit. If you already work in DevOps, though, you're closer than you think.

You're adding the ML half, and the rest of your job carries over. Our DevOps statistics roundup shows how big that pool of engineers already is.

8. How to Stand Out for MLOps Engineer Jobs

Demand is real. Glassdoor was showing around 4,000 MLOps engineer jobs in the United States in 2026.

Most of the people applying for those job opportunities have only worked through tutorials, though, and very few can walk through a real production incident in detail: what broke, how they caught it, what they changed so it wouldn't happen again.

That scarcity is your opening. You don't need more credentials than the next candidate.

You need two or three real pipelines you can talk about specifically, broken parts included, posted somewhere a hiring manager can find them before you ever apply.

Get known before you apply

This is the same advice I give developers in every discipline. The best roles rarely go to the best resume in a stack of 300 applications.

They go to the engineer the hiring manager already half-recognizes from a GitHub repo, a writeup, a conference talk, or a post that taught them something.

The best roles rarely go to the best resume in a stack of 300 applications.

Our AI engineer jobs breakdown shows the same pattern across the whole AI hiring market. Demand is high, the supply of people who can actually build and run this stuff is low, and the ones who get hired fastest made themselves visible before they needed the job.
